Usually in a form similar to www.yourcompany.com.au, they provide instant recognition for existing and potential customers.

Domain names ending in the extension .au are only available to businesses with a valid trademark, ACN/ABN or BRN. This offers some form of protection against another entity purchasing your potential name and possibly onselling for an inflated price.

Other types of domain names are .net.au, .org.au (reserved for non-profit organisations), .id.au (home/personal use), as well as global names which don't have the .au extension, even .nz for New Zealand.
